Creative Fusion 09'

Miad asked me to do an update on my "professional" life since I spoke at CF 08.

If you didn't know Creative fusion is a fundraiser at miad where donated works of art are auctioned off for scholarship money.
Milwaukee's most extraordinary celebration of fine art and design returned for a third year on Saturday, May 2, 2009, 6:30 p.m.

Creative Fusion: "Sculpting Talent, Designing the Future" was hosted at MIAD by:

Jessie & Jason Allen, Cherie & Steve Barth, Kim & Marc Marotta, Tracy & Jay Rothman

Here's what they put in the program. The kinda edited the first half and left the last paragraph the way I wrote it.

Design Bloopers

Can you spot whats wrong here?

So, while I was volunteering with the Onramp kids I picked up this Print magazine and started flipping through it and I came across this ad for a cintique. I noticed something was a little off so I did a double take and saw this

2 PENS FOR THE PRICE OF 1 LOL!
Looks like some one left a photoshop layer on that wasn't supposed to be there. Now there are two pens instead of one and it ended up in the magazine too. Bet you some one got fired for that.

The Man

This weeks service learning journal

The Man that so many people speak of can be more accurately described as a set of cyclic and problematic systems established in a racist American past. The title we give this machine factory of inequality is a misnomer because there are many men, women, and children who are involved with it. Willfully or in ignorance, many of us play rolls in these deeply rooted systems perpetuating the ideologies of white supremacy and the result of white privilege. I couldn't get past the first line of the Invisible Backpack with out stumbling across evidence of this scenario in the authors life.

"I was taught to see racism only in individual acts of meanness, not in invisible systems conferring dominance on my group"

"The Man" taught this woman that racism and racial suppression was unique, confined and individual. It may be real. It may be wrong, but it wasn't pandemic. Thinking like this can pull a wool over the eyes of many rational people and hide the ugly truth of America's administrative failures on the behalf of the impoverished and non white. Which in turn slows the progression of removing those unbalanced systems, continuing the racial suppression of many.

So much to blog about...

Well i really don't have the time to write about this but I just got to.

I'm tired of losing my people man. I hate statistics and I hate that my guys keep becoming them. Another one of my guys in jail, another black male who didn't live to 25. This is old man. And its Depressing. The world is fallen and deprived because of man's sin and with the freedom God gives us we just make it worse. But the hope comes through Christ that in the new Jerusalem, the new Eden, we wont have any of this senselessness and this pain.
Its hard but we all gotta hold on and look to God.

to the rest of the world all you may be is

to me all you've ever been is

Screen Printing with the Kids

OnRamp took a visit to Discovery World's screen printing studio today. The kids got a chance to see the printing process, print hand bags and shirts, and hear from the creative art director at D.C. and listen to her speak about their brand and the work she does in the museum and for the museum.I was kind of sad when she asked all the kids who was interested in being a "creative" for a career and only a handfull out of the group raised their hands past their chin let alone into the air. But looking over a few shoulders as the kids worked on their t-shirt designs I felt reassured that there was a lot of potential and talent in that room, just waiting to be cultivated.

We also decided as a group to extend the program for another 2 weeks to make sure those students can get the most of that experience.

Just Friends

I have been restraining from posting my intimate feelings and facts concerning what has been going on with me and my former fiancé out of respect for privacy and I will continue to after this post as well. I feel that these things don't need to be broad cast to the world but I am open to talk with people about them in a one on one setting.

So whats makes today different? Out of the past 3 1/2 months why am I typing this right now instead of sticking to the game plan of not "putting it on air". I guess its resolve. After a talk this evening we decided to be just "friends" officially. I am happy and pleased that God would allow us to reach this point knowing full on that she has the worldly right to never speak to me again. I have faith that what ever God has in store for our lives is best. If God intended for us to be together for ever as husband and wife then we will be. Perhaps during this time of separation some preparation, sanctification, growth, and transformation will take place in both of us. So that we could be comfortable being who we are with each other. But there is always the possibility that God's intent was only to allow us to be together for a season of our lives.

If the later is true, I regret nothing we ever did but will try to learn from the mistakes made while cherishing and holding dear all the wonderful times we had. And if our relationship is meant to be, then I know it would be stronger, having gone through this, than it ever was before. It would be firmly founded on the Rock of Jesus instead of the sands of the world.

A couple verses to ponder about knowledge

I was studying some suggested readings tonight and a few verses leaped of the page at me.

proverbs 3
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;

6 in all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make your paths straight. [a]

7 Do not be wise in your own eyes;
fear the LORD

proverbs 7
6 Do not forsake wisdom, and she(wisdom) will protect you;
love her, and she will watch over you.

7 Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom.
Though it cost all you have, [a] get understanding.

Hosea 4
6 My people perish for lack of knowledge
Because you have rejected knowledge,

lets see if we can unpack some of that

in the passage from proverbs 3 we got 3 things going on, in verse five we have a commandment; to TRUST God with every thing we can muster and don’t think or believe that we know whats right. We don't know what God wants from us or out of our lives by our own accord. We cant say why the world works the way it does or who God is, what his attributes are, or even his stance on the issues we face based on our own inclinations or conclusions from what we see because we are not God. With out Him telling us we cant possibly claim to know so we have to trust Him when He tells us these things for Him self, in His word. Our own understanding is inherently imperfect because we are imperfect there for any concept or notion that we try to come up with about God or how we relate to him that is based on our own understanding is bound to be flawed and incorrect in some if not all aspects. At this point only God understands God fully so if we want to know more about him or the way things really work then we need to trust Him and not our selves

then in verse 6 we get a promise; when we recognize God in everything we do then He will take care of everything for us - Thats it basically, echoed and re-affirmed by Jesus in Luke 12:31 this basicaly means if you stay commited to Christ and allow Him to be supreme over every aspect of your life then He will take care of you and make you life "easier" -some times easier means deliverance from pain and sometimes it means a coping mechanism to see you through it.

in verse 7 it is restated that we should not try to consider ourselves wise but to fear God implying that obedience and recognition of the fact that God is the one who is truly wise/knowledgeable and we know nothing in comparison. Some times its easy to get caught up in an intellectual high. Especially if you are one who likes to pursue knowledge and then start getting a big head like you really know something but the truth is we don’t really know anything we just believe we do. And if all our knowledge is based on belief who do you want to believe in? An imperfect person like ourselves who really doesn't know anything or and all knowing and all seeing God?

Hosea 4
6 My people perish for lack of knowledge because you have rejected knowledge, This verse is saying people around the world who God desires to have a true and honest relationship with don’t get one because they don't know the truth about God because people don't teach them. These may be "good" people who live example moral lives by the worlds standards yet they still perish because other people who have heard the truth of Jesus Christ rejected it and did not teach it. Good people die, and suffer because we reject God and do not share his truths with others so we must try to provide them at least with the chance to know. We can not and should not try to force it on them as it says in Matthew 10:14. If they do not want to accept what you tell them, love them but leave them in to their own ways. If God has ordained it to be then in due time it will but we are obligated to share the whole Gospel of Christ. The easy and the hard to swallow.

this is just an exercise im gonna start doing to help myself study the word of God and try to absorb it so you should start seeing these at least every other day. If you don't, ask me if I've been reading my word to try to get me motivated again.

peace

A question

“I member my guys used to catty, I tried to catty too but I was too dark. The man wanted light skin people to carry the clubs” - My 24 year old cousin Jeff said that this past Sunday as we watched a movie scene where group of men beat down a rival gang at a driving range.

My initial response was surprise. I was surprised by the event, surprised by the calm manner in which my cousin delivered his recollection, but then I was surprised that I was surprised. These events are not new to me so why do I continue to be thrown off guard by them?

I wasn't so much off kilter because of the act of discrimination on the part employer but the victimization of my cousin. My cousin was deemed too "dark" to carry golf clubs??? Golf Clubs. Not too dark to join a private country club but too dark to service the people with in that country club.

Even though I do take offense to this I just can't get over being surprised about it. Why, time after time, do I continue to retain some sort of shock. Shouldn't I have been desensitized by now? Do I really want to be desensitized?

Why I love my teachers

I stumbled across this post on a design blog this morning and loved every word. One of my teachers was responding to some one ranting on and on about problems in the professional design community as far as entry level designers lacking entry level job offers so my typography/packaging teacher chimed in with his two cents.

What happened to grey areas in the world of design?
Why is everyone proposing solutions to this dilemma in a black and white p.o.v?
I teach Communication Design full time at a great institution. (MIAD)
Each year we graduate 30 to 40 CD majors and usually have many great job placement stories within a few months after graduation. A lot of those positions started as design internships.
Sure, there are a few "D" students that make it through the system and get a degree. (like any other industry) But those students, after 4 years of solid critique by their peers and instructors, certainly know what their odds are of getting a "great" design job. As my design professor once told me; " Getting a great job in graphic design is easy. You just have to be really, really good."
Maybe the people that keep complaining about the state of the job market just aren't that good compared to their peers (for a multitude of possible reasons– not all design related). We talk to the "not-so-strong" ones candidly every semester about what they might best be suited for. (ie: Art/photo director vs. designer or perhaps account exec because of excellent verbal communication skills vs. design ability) We even tell some of them that maybe they should think about another Major.
They know that their best odds of getting a job won't be at an award winning agency. I'm here to say that there's room for some designers like this as well.
"Cream of the crop" design students that wind up at small "in-house" set-ups can become extremely frustrated. If I were the owner of such a business, I would want an employee that I could count on for the long run and not worry about that employee chasing after the next creative award at another place.
Is your career a sprint or a long-distance run?
Are you done learning once you graduate or has it just begun? I'm very proud of the excellent designers that we help prepare, but I'm equally proud of the few "not-so-great" ones that have made the biggest leaps and may wind up managing the great ones some day (because of their humility and acceptance of what they can and cannot do).
I'm a huge proponent of excellence in design, but an even bigger supporter of excellence in people development. That is the result that truly defines who you are, certainly carrying over into your design career.

Lost my homework, again

So this is the second week in a row were I've lost my work due to hard drive issues. The first time was my fault cause I accidentally deleted some things while backing up my files on to my brand new buffalo 1Tb hard drive.
But guess what, That thing just BROKE! Yep, it just keeps making a clicking noise which means its done for unless I can find someone with a clean room to fix it. Plus it had all of my most recent work on it which sucks but God is good so I know that some how He allowed this to happen to Glorify him in the end. Maybe i'll make a bunch of new stuff or just learn not to put all my eggs in one basket.

Way to go facebook

So as you may know I entered that Cool Kids competition right? I sent out an event invitation on facebook to spread the word but a lot of people don't read those. Some people may have thought it was a real event instead of an internet contest so to follow up, I wrote them all messages. As I was coping and pasting my letter I got this...

Working Too Much?

I don't want to be that guy you see in the movies who's too busy for his own family. You know him, he means well but he always misses his son's karate belt ceremonies. Then tries to make up for it by fighting random mail men and mafioso Santa Clawses for a little red action figure, then be forced to pilot a faulty jet pack in order to save his kid from a deranged maniac with a giant brain.

Its hard man. Its hard when you have these expectations to live up to. People want you to be good at what you do, they want you to blow them away. So now I'm sitting at my computer till the wee hours of the morning stressin, trying to make some thing look more amazing than I can. Don't get me wrong, I love the push to be better but some times I need to just relax and do some thing for fun(design or life wise). I think that's one reason why I made this blog; to do something for myself by sharing with the people I'm "too busy for". I do have lots of friends and family but we don't always have time to just kick it and I think this may be a good way for us to stay connected. Plus its a nice way to keep track of what I'm thinking and experiencing.
